UPDATE (04/01/16): dvsn has dropped the CDQ of their Aaliyah remix/Prince mash-up, and it's sounds amazing.
Tonight's episode of OVO Sound Radio included a special guest mix from OVO's newly signed R&B act dvsn. At the end of the episode, Noah "40" Shebib hopped on the air to reveal that dvsn's debut album, Sept. 5th, will be out tonight at midnight, a week ahead of schedule. Dvsn's OVO mix included unheard tracks off Sept. 5th, including "In + Out" and "Do It Well," as well as another exclusive in the form of a remix of Aaliyah's classic hit single "One in a Million."
Dvsn mixes his (the only known persona behind dvsn is a male vocalist) vocals with those of Aaliyah, and he also throws in some lyrics from Prince's "Purple Rain." The dvsn singer is clearly well-versed in the history of R&B, as tonight's OVO Sound mix included tracks from Ginuwine, R. Kelly, The Isley Brothers, Beyonce, and many more. The songs heard thus far off Sept. 5th showcase a modern interpretation of '90s R&B, but the focus has been in channeling an essence that unites all classic examples of the genre.
