Lil Kim, born Kimberly Denise Jones, is a dope artist. As such, the rapper was honored by the New York City Council’s Black, Latino and Asian Caucus (BLAC) yesterday. The recognition was part of this year's African-American Music Appreciation Month.

Amidst this celebration, the Brooklyn native seems to have hit a steady stream of rough patches financially. We've been calling Kim a queen for a minute, but she still faces her fair share of regular people problems. The mansion she had in Jersey was foreclosed back in 2010 and will soon be up for auction. She addressed her recent bankruptcy with a positive attitude a couple of days ago, speaking of God's protection over his children. The honors she has received yesterday will likely help stoke that vibe and keep her on a high until her long-awaited album drops.

As the queen that she is, any mention expressing her musical achievements is unsurprising and mostly well-deserved. She has moved audiences since she entered the game with her debut, Hard Core, in 1996, and has redefined what a female MC could look like while rapping as fiercely as dresses. Lil Kim is an Icon that has paved the way for all of your favorite female MCs, regardless of who is willing to admit it. Only a few gems have demonstrated the ability to remain cherished after making fans wait over a decade for an album.

While the wait continues, appreciate the heat Lil Kim delivers with Fabolous on her latest single "Spicy" or view part of her acceptance speech below.
