The two Disney films are in a race to reign supreme.

Disney's A Wrinkle in Time will finally debut in theatres nationwide tomorrow, and is the first film to have a black female director helm a $100 million production.

The project is an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved science fantasy novel of the same name, which stars Hollywood heavyweights Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, with Selma's Ava DeVyernay directing the film.

Early box office projections have forecasted that the family-friendly motion picture will amass around $35-$40 million in its opening weekend, which is a particularly subtle figure given for a marquee Disney title with a particularly large budget.

The current king of the box-office Black Panther is expected to take in nearly $40 million this weekend, which may help the ubiquitous Disney production dominate the American box office one again. The film is slated to take in $1 billion worldwide in the near future, and will open in Chinese theatres on Friday.

So far, A Wrinkle in Time isn't being showered with the same level of critical adoration that Black Panther experienced in the weeks leading up to its premiere. The film currently has a paltry 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which may hinder the project's long-term success.
