Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan has issued a statement of support for professional athletes expressing themselves on social issues, in the wake of recent tweets from President Trump.

The POTUS sent out several tweets directed at athletes and team owners over the weekend, including one referencing Golden State Warriors All-Star Steph Curry, who had said he'd vote "no" when the team voted on whether or not to go to the White House.

In response to Curry's comments at the Warriors' Media Day last week, Trump tweeted,

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!”

A number of athletes, coaches and owners have been critical of Trump's remarks - not just about Curry but about his stance on anthem protests - including, Michael Jordan who released a statement in support of NBA commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, and all the players who are exercising their right to free speech.

Jordan said, per the Charlotte Observer

“One of the fundamental rights this country is founded on was freedom of speech, and we have a long tradition of nonviolent, peaceful protest. Those who exercise the right to peacefully express themselves should not be demonized or ostracized. At a time of increasing divisiveness and hate in this country, we should be looking for ways to work together and support each other and not create more division. I support Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, its players and all those who wish to exercise their right to free speech.”

It's rare for Michael Jordan to speak on public issues, he has been known for his reluctance to discuss such things in the past, but Trump's recent actions have prompted even the most reserved public figures to intervene and speak out.
