Diddy & Metro Boomin Give Back To Historically Black Colleges

The social unrest that currently exists in this country has, of course, had a profound effect on the hip-hop world. Many artists have spoken out on issues affecting Black America, while others have used their music as a means of protest. Some have looked toward education as their way of giving back. Two artists in particular, one veteran mogul and one 23-year-old producer -- Sean "Puffy" Combs and Metro Boomin, have pledged to help deserving students in need of financial aid attend prestigious historically black institutions free of charge. Puffy has donated $1 million to Howard University, which will be set up in a scholarship in his name, and Metro Boomin plans to use all of the proceeds from an upcoming concert to put a high school senior from his hometown of St. Louis through an undergraduate tenure at Morehouse College. 

Diddy, who attended Howard University in 1990 before dropping out after two years, announced the Sean Combs Scholarship Fund during a Bad Boy Reunion tour stop in Washington D.C., during which he presented Howard's president Dr. Wayne Frederick with a $1 million check. "I didn't graduate from Howard. I was blessed to get my honorary degree but that doesn't tell the whole story," explained Combs, before going on to credit the university for a playing a vital role in his successful career. “Because the only reason why I was able to chase my dreams was the empowerment that Howard gave me, the support that they gave me, the first two years."

The scholarship will be enacted in the fall of 2017 and will be awarded to an undergraduate student in need of financial assistance who's pursuing a degree in business. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA, and he or she will also be given a mentor from Combs Enterprises and will get the opportunity to intern at Bad Boy Entertainment or the Revolt Media Network. Metro Boomin's charity concert also happens to be a rally against GOP nominee Donald Trump. He announced the "Young Metro Don't Trust Trump" concert earlier this week, and today, he added 21 Savage, the rapper with whom he created the incredible album Savage Mode, to the bill. The show goes down on Nov. 4 at the Playstation Theater in NYC. 

The gifted producer has stated that he will keep up his initiative to send a St. Louis student to Morehouse every year from here on out.
