Tinashe Speaks Out On Colorism And Sexism In Controversial New Interview

Tinashe's new interview with UK publication The Guardian has caused some blowback to come her way online.

In the piece, Tinashe started off talking about her long-delayed new album, but it veered quickly into the starlet's strong opinions on the sexism and colorism that she says are rampant in the music industry. On the former issue, she explains: "Male artists don’t really co-sign female artists like that, and if they do it’s always like, 'Are they f**king?' It’s never, 'Oh, I really like her music.'"

She goes on to say that there's only room for a certain number of black women in the hip-hop landscape, in terms of archetypes. She said, "There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange." Additionally, Tinashe clarified that this is an issue of colorism, iterating "It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes."

Users on Twitter were decidedly less forgiving when it came to Tinashe's stance, turning the focus to the "real" reason she is having trouble with her image.
