An unbelievable story of theft and deception is emerging in the aftermath of the release of J. Cole's new album 4 Your Eyez Only. Listeners may have experienced deja vu upon hearing "Deja Vu," which uses a nearly identical beat to Bryson Tiller's hit "Exchange." Boi-1da & Vinylz produced "Deja Vu" and they gave an explanation early Friday morning: Foreign Teck, one half of production duo The Mekanics, straight-up stole the beat from them and gave it to Bryson Tiller.
Me and @Boi1da made that exchange beat first.," Vinylz wrote on Twitter. "It was stolen from us by a thief named @ForeignTeck Cole song was recorded before exchange. I sent this thief a video of me making the Deja Vu beat..a week later he post a beat on ig with the same drums. I made him take it down."
"Exchange" peaked at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Vinylz alleges that Foreign Teck offered him publishing, a tacit admission that he had reverse engineered the beat. Teck attempted to justify his actions and assuage Boi-1da and Vinylz last night by saying that they have more money and get more placements than him.
"S/o to my brother Bryson," Vinylz wrote. "He has nothing to do with this. This is all directed at the producer."
