The change is in the interest of healthy debate.

Twitter and other social networks have always faced tough choices when it comes to who and what to censor, while still promoting free speech and healthy debate on their site. After intense deliberation about how to improve debate, the Telegraph reports that Twitter has decided to remove the "like" button. As for when, it will apparently happen "soon." In a typically canny statement Twitter neither confirmed nor denied if they would remove the button:

In other words, yes, they will be removing it, much to the joy of one of their most prolific and controversial users, Kanye West, who tweeted about this very issue in September:

Kanye even had a conversation with the head of Jack Dorsey, the head of Twitter, about this very issue (Dorsey recently said he's "not a fan of the heart-shaped button"). Perhaps public opinion will finally come back behind Mr. West.
