Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most successful franchises over at Disney. In fact, before the MCU, Pirates was Disney's gem. It was a franchise that cultivated a built-in audience that would return for sequel after sequel as long as Johnny Depp was starring. Depp's career blossomed after his role as Sparrow, with the actor claiming that Pirates made him a commercial superstar. "I went through 20 years of what the industry basically described as failures. For 20 years I was defined as box office poison," stated Depp. "But that little film Pirates Of The Caribbean came round and I thought, yeah, it'll be fun to play a pirate for my kiddies. It changed my life. I'm hyper, super-thankful that radical turn happened."
As reported by Deadline, Disney is interested in rebooting their Pirates franchise and have met with the writing team of Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick. The meeting centered around preliminary talks about crafting a script for the franchise to grow further. Reese and Wernick are in high demand after the success of the first two Deadpool films, which they wrote. The writing team also scribed Zombieland and its upcoming sequel, and 6 Underground, the Netflix Michael Bay film starring Ryan Reynolds which is still in production.
