If Rosane Gay loses her game face when your records come on, you probably have "the gift." R&b impresario Tank appealed to the cougar demographic well before he encroached the dividing line himself. Now that he's well into his 40s, his bassy singing voice remains unchanged, which is incidentally why he chose a sparse drum pad on his latest single "Dirty" - just so he could to highlight his well-aged chops.
But singing alone doesn't win you the cougar demographic. On "Dirty" Tank gives his fans enough hyperrealism to have them living vicariously through his every whim, in the ways a has-been novelist could never deliver "Erotica."
Before Tank came to be known as the veritable minivan-slayer, he was but a dutiful backup singer to Ginuwine. Only later, would Tank equal stature with his mentor, by joining him in a super trio with Tyrese Gibson. Now that Tyrese has become a complete and utter emotional wreck, and Ginuwine a "fake beardist," Tank has the passing lane all to himself.
