The murder trial of Suge Knight, the former CEO of Death Row Records, has been granted a new starting date after various delays prevented it from beginning.
According to The New York Daily News, the judge in charge of the case decided that jury selection will begin on September 24, and will mark the start of a case that is now over three years old.
Knight's original arrest stemmed from a February, 2015, incident, in which Knight allegedly murdered his associate, Compton businessman Terry Carter, and attempted to murder another, Cle Sloan, by running them over with his truck. Knight was reportedly furious following a fight earlier in the day at the production offices for the N.W.A. bio-pic, Straight Outta Compton.
Knight's trial has suffered significant delays since then, due to a series of incidents, including being hospitalized for blood clots, having two of his lawyers arrested on conspiracy charges, and having one of his lawyers (his 15th, in fact) abruptly quit. Knight has been assigned a new court appointed lawyer and has stated that he is healthy enough to proceed with the trial.
Knight's sister, Karen Anderson, stated that they would be seeking another private defense lawyer before the start of the trial, but maintains that Knight is ready to stand trial.
Carter's wife, Lillian Carter, who was in attendance, expressed disbelief at the constant delays. ""I just can't even wrap my head around it. It's totally ridiculous," said Lillian. "I've got a headache even thinking about it."
Knight has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
