Black Thought has returned, and with him comes another dose of bars to unpack. "It's wild how the youngins is dumb proud, follow the crowd now," raps Black Thought, on "Get Outlined," "leading the blind with they minds up in a SoundCloud." It might be the closest we've come to Thought dropping knowledge on the state of the game; in true fashion, we're left to infer his deeper message through the surrounding stanzas. "Ain't a lotta sunshine when you on a frontline, listenin' to that ghetto drumline, duckin' one-time," he continues, painting a picture of his own surroundings, how they bred a sense of authenticity.
Behind the boards, Salaam Remi delivers a simple backdrop, evocative of the golden-era aesthetic. A rolling bassline loops over breakbeats, emphasized by muted guitar hits and Ron Burgundy-esque Jazz Flutes. Hardly flashy, but more than effective for the purpose of lyrical dexterity. "Where I'm from it's a war scene where more fiends scream for Morphine, Zoloft and Thorazine," spits Thought, in the opening bars of verse two. It's truly impressive how much the man is capable of expressing in a single thought, and hearing his destroy an old-school instrumental should set the heart of a purist a-flutter.
