On the 21st of July Travis Scott performed at the Paris edition of Lollapalooza. Now, two weeks later, a video has surface of Laflame shouting out the recently deceased XXXtentacion by saying with concision: "r.i.p. my n***a X."
The shout-out is not the first. Since his death, XXXTentacion has been getting more popular, with his hit "SAD!" getting certified triple platinum a couple days ago. What's been most surprising is the way that other rappers and musicians–who were silent about the Florida rapper while he was alive–have come out since his death to praise him. The most notable of these is biggest-on-earth Kanye West.
Ye (and many others) have been influenced by the genre that XXXTentacion helped to create: emo rap. Just think of the most striking song on Kanye's recent Ye, "Ghost Town," which features a fellow emo rapper 070 Shake. The hesitation to praise X during his life could perhaps have been the result of the allegations that he abused his ex while she was pregnant. Since his death, the charges have been dropped.
