Jordan Peele's four-time Oscar-nominated film Get Out was released on February 24th, 2017 and is still getting all the attention it deserves to this day. The movie that has been classified as a satire, thriller, horror or even a comedy follows a wild tale of a white woman who takes her black boyfriend home for the first time, only for him to find some disturbing discoveries.
The film has made such an impact on the conversation of how black people are portrayed in the real world, that there's even a class at UCLA based on Jordan's box office hit. Appropriately named “The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival, and Black Horror Aesthetic" the class - that's also available online - touches on "conversations that are happening now in 2018 concerning race that have never been happening in the history of this country, thanks to Get Out," professor Tananarive Due said. “There is an opening for artists right now. If you’re willing to speak a dangerous truth, and you’ve got the skill to do it right, there is real opportunity.”
The class will analyze how black people are portrayed in films such as "being the monsters in Birth of a Nation to being the ones who fight the monsters,” Tananarive's husband Steve added, who also runs the program.
