A security guard was killed outside San Francisco’s Warfield theater after a disturbance at a “Baddies USA: Chapter Three” event. According to SF Standard, police say Shakia Vanderbilt, 32, was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder, intentionally discharging a firearm in an occupied building, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The victim was Ulysses Tykee Davis, 47, a father of six who was working security at the venue.
The shooting happened around 1 a.m. Saturday on Market Street, after the event featuring the reality show’s cast. Police Chief Derrick Lew said there had been a disruption inside the theater and Vanderbilt was escorted outside. A dispute followed, and Davis was shot. Lew has not said whether investigators believe Davis was the intended target. Police say surveillance footage captured the shooting.
Davis’ death has left his family grieving after a violent scene that reportedly unfolded in front of some of them. His wife and two of his six children were at the Warfield, according to relatives who spoke with local news outlets. Davis was known to loved ones as “Bear.” His brother-in-law, Terrance Cooper, told KTVU that Davis was helping escort a disruptive woman from the venue when she allegedly shot him in the back. Davis was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Family Left Grieving
There are still unanswered questions about what happened inside the theater before the shooting. The District Attorney’s Office said Vanderbilt may have entered the venue with a gun despite the screening process. Warfield staffers also told Mission Local that a chemical irritant, possibly bear mace, was sorayed during the event. Moreover, possibly prompting attendees to rush toward the exits. That account adds context to reports of a chaotic night, but officials have not said the irritant was connected to the shooting.
Prosecutors have said they will ask for Vanderbilt to be held without bail.
The Warfield and Zeus Network had not responded to requests for comment in the local reports reviewed. San Francisco police are also investigating whether the venue had the proper permits for the event. For now, the case centers on the events outside the theater and the loss of a man who, according to his family, was there doing his job.
