Drake is currently in the midst of a legal battle with UMG. The artist has been signed to the label for years now, but following the beef with Kendrick Lamar, he opted to sue as he felt like the label was trying to defame him. In fact, he felt this was being done in service of lowering his value in future contract talks.
Months ago, the lawsuit was thrown out. Eventually, he appealed, and on December 4, he will be back in court to see if the judge overturns the initial decision. If not, then the lawsuit is officially dead.
In the midst of this, there has been speculation as to whether or not Drake is still under UMG, and if he has any obligations to the label. For instance, there were rumblings that UMG was taking down social media clips from Drake's new "FOMO" short film.
According to DJ Akademiks, he believes that Drake will be under contract with UMG until May or June of next year, and then he can do whatever he wants.

However, Akademiks threw a different option out there that is certainly going to raise a few eyebrows. He believes there is a world in which Drake actually ends up re-signing with UMG as part of a larger settlement stemming from the lawsuit.
It is a bold prediction with a few problems. UMG clearly doesn't believe it has anything to settle, especially since the lawsuit was originally dismissed. If the decision gets overturned, then the expectation is that they would fight it tooth and nail. Meanwhile, given everything that has happened, you have to wonder if Drake would ever want to return to UMG.
