When Drake decided to sue UMG Recordings following his Kendrick Lamar beef, there were plenty of folks out there who felt like the artist had ruined his reputation. After all, rap beefs shouldn't be settled by lawsuits. Instead, they should be settled through bars and diss records.
However, Drake was quick to make the claim that this lawsuit was not an act of vengeance. Instead, the artist saw it as a fight against the system. He felt as though UMG was plotting against him to bring down his worth in potential contract negotiations. Therefore, he believes this fight could benefit the little guy. The artists who may not have the resources to go up against the major label system.
While some are skeptical of Drake's true intentions, there is no doubt that he is fighting the machine, tooth and nail. Months ago, his lawsuit was dismissed. However, Drake sought to get an appeal.
Now, according to The Drake Docket on X, a date has been determined for the appeal. Oral argument will take place on December 4, 2026.
Drake vs UMG
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will be the one in charge of listening to Drake's legal team. Meanwhile, UMG Recordings is seeking the court to affirm the initial decision. If UMG gets its way, then the lawsuit is likely dead for good.
Regardless of the outcome here, there are going to be some strong opinions and vitriol towards Drake. It's hard to justify a rap beef getting to this point, even when you consider the contractual and financial incentives involved.
