Gomez is telling fans to love themselves just the way they are.
Being a celebrity requires thicker skin, as they are routinely subject to the public's condemnation and criticism at the most rudimentary and topical levels. A bad haircut, questionable outfit, or smallest facial blemish will attract a chorus of online hatred from users ready to unload their negativity on a person they probably have never met.
However, those celebrities who can deflect any adversity take it upon themselves to use their massive social currency to influence their fanbase with positivity; case in point, Selena Gomez. The singer has long professed the benefits of evading societal stigmas and living an authentic life true to a person's individuality. Her 2016 single "Kill 'Em with Kindness" encouraged those who receive animosity to fight their oppressors with affection and decency, rather than wallow in anger and linger in a perpetual state of self-doubt.
Taking to Instagram yesterday, Gomez posted a heavily filtered series of vignettes detailing her latest vacation in Australia, which saw the singer/actress reposing with friends on a yacht. She included a particularly empowering message alongside the video which reads "The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."
Gomez is showing the public that what's on the outside can fade and diminish, but it's a person's integrity and benevolence that ultimately matters most at the end of the day.
