A 26-year-old Guatemalan woman injured herself after falling from a fence at the US–Mexico border with her two young children in tow.

According to a new report, a young Guatemalan woman was injured as she attempted to scale a fence at the US–Mexico border along with her two young children. US Border Patrol agent Tekae Michael informed Buzzfeed News that the unfortunate incident occurred late this Friday around 11:25 p.m at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

The unidentified and unnamed woman is said to have landed on pieces of rebar which ultimately pierced the side of her body and buttocks when she fell. She was immediately treated by paramedics on the scene, then transported to local hospital where her wounds were tended to and her children, ages 3 and 5, were evaluated. Fortunately, her young children were not injured. The children were subsequently released to Border Patrol custody.

"Entering our country illegally, particularly over our walls, is not only dangerous, but also very foolish," said Rodney Scott, a San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent. "This woman placed her own life and her children’s lives in peril. She could have easily died if not for the quick response by our agents and EMS."

Officials are in the midst of conducting an investigation to determine how the woman and her children were able to reach the area.
