Joseph Chilliams' debut effort has finally arrived.
After much time behind the scenes as a producer and lending guest vocals on project's for the likes of Noname and his younger brother Saba, the Pivot Gang founder's Henry Church album is officially a real thing, and it's a fitting introduction for those just getting acquainted with the Chicago-bred artist.
Packaged into 13 tracks in total, Henry Church gets its name simply from the English translation of Enrique Iglesias, and sports production from Saba, Cory Grindberg, Sen Morimoto, Dae Dae Pivot, and Chilliams himself.
The vocal features include the likes of MfnMelo, Jamila Woods, Noname, Supa Bwe, and a posthumous appearance from Jospeh Chilliams' late cousin and fellow Pivot Gang rapper DinnerWithJohn on the project's final track "Charlie Murphy."
“This album isn’t for me at all,” Joseph told publication These Days prior to Henry Church's. “I don’t really think of music like that. ...I don’t really think of a group of people. I think, ‘Oh this person, and that person,’ you know? I want people to know they have a friend out here.”
“So if I’m doing that. If I am as free as I want to be, if I am 100% me, then they can see that this shit is possible.”
On the heels of Henry Church's debut, Chilliams will headlining his first, and now sold-out, show/release party on Monday (August 28) at Schubas in his hometown of Chicago. He'll be joined by TheMind, Jean Deaux, SqueakPivot, and MfnMelo.
Following Monday's party, he'll be hitting the stage alongside Saba and other members of Pivot at Chicago's House of Blues for John Walt Day on November 25th in memory of rapper DinnerWithJohn, who was fatally stabbed in Feruary of this year.
