Getting a peek behind the (audio) curtain.
J. Cole let a big cat out of the bag this past weekend, in terms of how he constructed one of his most popular songs.
As per DJ Booth, the R&B star made a stop on his 4 Your Eyez Only tour stop in Anaheim recently. Cole proceeded to make a reveal that most artists wouldn't dare dream of, by letting the crowd in on the secret to his "Neighbors" beat.
"Cali, listen," he said before making a transition from "Forbidden Fruit" into "Neighbors," with the instrumental for the latter simply being the former played in reverse. Mind = blown.
So dope. Cole's "Forbidden Fruit" in reverse is his "Neighbors" beat pic.twitter.com/knHEY1PpwB— Letty (@Letty) July 10, 2017
Here's something to note though: before you start searching for the two instrumentals and try to make a mash-up at your desk at work, realize that elements from the percussion were taken out piece-by-piece in the concert clip, something you might not be able to replicate with your Internet browser.
