The popular film that follows two agents providing immigration services to aliens on earth is about to get an official spinoff.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Steven Spielberg will jump on to executive producer the Men In Black spinoff, as he did for the original trilogy. Sony will be leading the film that will be written by the same writers who did the box office hit Iron Man, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. We know that the upcoming film will focus on new characters, as opposed to the iconic duo that is Agents K and J - played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.
Producer Walter F. Parkes tells Deadline: "It's so rare to get to the end of the script and know you're holding a movie in your hands – but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MIB world, and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."
The original Men in Black, that was released in 1997, made $589 million at the global box office and was followed up by two sequels.
Apparently Sony has put the spinoff on fast track and has a release date set to May 17, 2019.
Will Smith is going strong with some notable movies on the come-up. The 49-year-old will be Genie in the upcoming Aladdin live action remake and his IMDB shows that the Bad Boys movies are in the works, where he and co-star Martin Lawrence play Miami detectives.
Will Smith recently made headlines at the end of the summer after him and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed live on stage at this year's Livewire Music Festival in Blackpool, in Northwestern England. The two proved that time ain't nothing, as they threw down some of their biggest tracks like "Miami," and "Boom! Shake The Room."
Will's 24-year-old son Trey, who has been called the inspiration for the rapper/actor's take on the classic song "Just the Two of Us," was in the crowd to see him perform. "It's incredible," he said "Looking at my dad up there he's obviously loving it!"
Will and Jazzy won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance for their 1988 song "Parents Just Don't Understand."
