Tracy McGrady has reportedly agreed to join the Orlando Magic as a special assistant to CEO Alex Martins.
What exactly does a special assistant do?
According to the Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi and Josh Robbins, McGrady will have several roles with the franchise, including working with players and coaches throughout the regular season both on and off the court. Additionally, T-Mac will help promote and market the new Lakeland Magic G League franchise, and he could help with recruiting free agents to the Magic.
The Orlando Magic officially announced the news today. The team's CEO, Alex Martins, spoke about what it means to have the Class of 2017 NBA Hall of Famer on the Orlando Magic staff.

“Having Tracy McGrady, a perennial All-Star and a Hall-of-Famer, on our staff is tremendous for our entire organization,” said Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins. “Whether it will be on the court with the team or in the Central Florida community, Tracy’s knowledge, experience and stature will be an incredible asset for our players and our organization. We are extremely excited to bring him back home.”
McGrady, who played with the Magic for four seasons from 2000-04, is excited to be back with the team where he achieved so much success.
“I am thrilled to be back where I truly made a name for myself - with the Orlando Magic,” said McGrady. “The DeVos family and the entire organization have always done everything in a first-class manner and I am excited to be able to help them with whatever they may need.”
During his time with Orlando as a player, Tracy McGrady averaged 28.1 points, seven rebounds and a little over five assists per game. He was a two-time All-NBA First Team selection (2001-02, 2002-03), as well as a two-time All-NBA Second Team selection (2000-01, 2003-04). McGrady was an All-Star for each of his four seasons with the Magic, led the NBA in scoring twice (2002-03, 32.1 points per game and 2003-04, 28 points per game) and was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2000-01.
The Orlando Magic will open up their 2017 NBA regular season schedule at home against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, October 18th.
