When residents of L.A. woke up this morning, the year wasn't the only thing that changed. Some time in the early hours of the morning, a gutsy prankster got the bright idea to alter the Hollywood sign to read, yes, HollyWEED.
According to the L.A. Times, security footage has revealed the prank to be a one-man job carried out at around 3AM, however, they have not yet been identified. As for the potential consequences, a misdemeanor trespassing charge could be coming this jokers way if apprehended.
California passed Prop 64, which legalized recreational marijuana, last year, which seems like it could be a possible motive for the sign alteration, especially seeing as the exact same prank was pulled January 1st, 1976 after another more relaxed marijuana law was passed.
The sign, which was altered with black and white tarps, was fixed by authorities by the afternoon.
Twitter has already declared 2017 an improvement on 2016 following the stunt. Read some of the reactions to "Hollyweed" below.
