"The Hate You Give" has been receiving rave reviews since its release last week.

Amandla Stenberg is no longer a 'breakout star' since she's already starred in a few blockbuster hits, but she's without a doubt made her name known since her role in The Hate You Give. The film is based on Angie Thomas’s novel of the same name about a teen who witnesses her friend get shot and killed at the hands of a white police officer.

The 19-year-old actress paid a visit to The Daily Show With Trevor Noah last night to talk about the movie and she explained how "it’s meant to be a tool of empathy."

"So far it’s been really successful," she added. "We’ve had a lot of white people crying after, which is great. I’ve never seen so many white people crying before. It’s amazing.”

And apparently, that was a minor goal in the making of the movie. "We wanted to make sure that those who have been affected by the ways the media misconstrues these events actually have a real sense of empathy and are able to place themselves into the shoes of our communities," she explained. “These are not just news events. These are happening to real people. They affect us in really deep and pervasive ways.”
