Ten days ago, a songwriter by the name of Aviel Hirschfield filed a copyright lawsuit, accusing Drake of stealing the hook to "Janice STFU." Hirschfield claims he found the original beat from FnZ, then wrote a song to it. Subsequently, Hirschfield alleged that the song was sent back to FnZ, who then gave it to Drake, who then plagiarized the hook.
Drake's team was quick to deny the allegations. However, last week, a reference track made its way online, which seemingly corroborated Hirschfield's allegations. That said, there was quite a bit of speculation surrounding the authenticity of that recording.
Well, on Tuesday, it was reported by Rolling Stone that Hirschfield has officially decided to withdraw his lawsuit. It has been willingly dismissed by the plaintiff. At this time, the reason for the withdrawal is unknown.
Drake Scores Legal Victory
Of course, this is a big legal win for Drake. Furthermore, it is an optics win as well. There were already folks out there who were skeptical about Hirschfield's claims. While the reasoning behind his withdrawal is unknown, there are certainly some who will feel as though this vindicates their skepticism.
This is all taking place while Drake celebrates his 40th birthday. Over the weekend, the artist was out in New York City, where he got to celebrate with some of his closest friends and confidants.
For now, it remains to be seen whether or not Drake will offer up a response to this lawsuit being dropped. Regardless, this is a large win for an artist who continues to prove that he can still drop hits this far into his career.
