Hottest Albums Of 2014
In terms of sales, hip hop albums did not do very well this year. As of press time, J. Cole is the only rapper with a gold album this year, and he just sneaked into the fourth quarter with a surprise release. Most of this boils down to a simple lack of "event" albums. Most of the biggest hip hop artists dropped last year (Drake, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z, etc.), and thus created something of a drought in terms of high profile releases.

While performing down at SXSW in Austin, Texas on Monday, Killer Mike and El-P had a stupid, unidentified man run up on stage and try attacking them, but Killer Mike wasn’t having any of it (like the OG he is).
These Hip Hop Artists Are "On The Way To Legend" According To Talib Kweli
Talib Kweli can usually be found debating, arguing, or flat out beefing with his Twitter followers. On Tuesday, he responded to a tweet that suggested that there are no one today matches the artistry of golden era greats like Rakim and A Tribe Called Quest. “I disagree,” Kweli wrote. “RTJ, Joey Badass, Kendrick, Cole, Rapsody, Anderson Paak Chance, all great on the way to legend.”
Killer Mike Reacts To Kendrick Lamar's "Hood Politics" Shout-Out
There was certainly a lot to process on the first listen of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, but one very immediate lines came in "Hood Politics," where K-Dot rapped "Critics want to mention that they miss when Hip-Hop was rappin’/ Motherfucker if you did, then Killer Mike’d be platinum”.

The Art Of Storytelling: The Best Stories Told In 2014
There's a lot of bickering about lyrical content in today's rap game--well, that's always been the case. But old-headed purists argue, and will continue to argue, that today's lyricists lack the depth of their long gone favorite MCs. Of course, what you look for in a rapper depends on your personal taste. Sometimes, lyrics might take a back seat. Sure, "flow" is heightened with impressive wordplay, but many of today's most prolific rappers bang most of their buck with vocal cadence, pitching and stretching their voices to meld with a specific beat.
Running The Jewels & The Game: An Argument For Killer Mike As The Top MC Of The Past Three Years
Ask most Hip-Hop fans who’s been running the rap game the past three years, and the answers would mostly be the same; Kendrick Lamar…Drake…maybe some J. Cole. Even with somewhat of an agreement, there’s no science to this. There’s no exact formula of determining who is on top. Is it record sales? Some would say that, and that would justify the belief that Kendrick, Drake, or Cole are on top of the game. Using that logic however would leave justification of our culture up to whoever is buying music…whoever.

Best Album Covers Of 2014
In many ways, it's surprising that we're still doing a list like this in 2014, as we've reached a point where music has, almost, gone entirely digital. No one's actually buying physical albums, but we still see album artwork with each release, and we certainly had some compelling examples in 2014. Artists and labels continue to invest a lot of effort, and money, into the artwork they adjoin their releases with.
