OVO Sound Radio went up in a major way this past weekend. With three exclusives from French Montana -- the "Lockjaw" remix, the Maaly Raw-produced "Two Times," and his collab with Drake, "No Shopping" -- you'd be forgiven for checking out before the special guest mix, which came from the hottest star in dancehall, Popcaan, with whom Drizzy has established a strong partnership.
One Dance (Culture Clash Dub Plate)
Popcaan celebrated his Mixpak team's victory in last week's 2016 Red Bull Culture Clash by yelling "Fuck Wiz Khalifa!" and blaring a dub plate (essentially an alternate version of a song) of Drake's #1 smash "One Dance."
Popcaan's voice basically captures that summer feeling in a bottle: warm, loose, and ready to party! He lent his vocals to 2015's song of the summer "(I Know There's Gonna Be) Good Times." It looks like he may have another summer anthem on his hands: "Ova Dweet."
Drake Feat. Popcaan
Two new Drake tracks leaked this morning. “Controlla” feat. Popcaan joins “These Days” as the first two songs we’re hearing from the upcoming Views From The Six. While the other track is a dreamy pop song, “Controlla” is a downtempo Caribbean jam. Drake uses a very subtle amount of Auto-Tune as he sings for a girl that continues to play games, almost controlling him.
I'm In Control
AlunaGeorge Feat. Popcaan
AlunaGeorge debuted their new single on BBC Radio with Annie Mac earlier this afternoon, and it's now hit the web with a stream. The record features a dancehall influence, thanks to featured artist Popcaan, but even in the production there's a hint of that Jamaican touch.
Weed Is My Best Friend
While countless rappers have bragged about their blunt-smoking prowess, few have gone so far as to treat their relationship with weed as a bromance, as Jamaican dancehall star Popcaan does on "Weed is My Best Friend." The uplifting track is the audible equivalent of aquamarine Caribbean water sparkling in the sunlight, on account of JA Production & Justus' shimmering string & steel drum beat and Popcaan's thick, jolly Jamaican patois, which is about as easy to understand as Young Thug. His voice rings with great conviction, as if weed really is his best friend.
Freak Of The Week (Remix)
Krept & Konan Feat. Jeremih, Popcaan & Beenie Man
South London duo Krept & Konan have been collaborating with some North American talent recently, successfully getting the attention of audiences overseas with the Rick Ross-assisted "Certified," and most recently, "Freak Of The Week," which paired them with sought-after hitmakers Jeremih and
Chief Keef's "Hate Being Sober" was the ultimate ode to inebriation, but now a few years old, it's time we found a new soundtrack to our summer binges, and Popcaan's new record may be it. "Never Sober" is a much breezier record than Keef's and it's the best sound for the reggae artist, who's been bring a certain sweetness back to the genre.
I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)
Jamie xx Feat. Young Thug & Popcaan
Since the tracklist for Jamie xx's long-awaited proper debut showed up, anticipation has been high for one song in particular. The features on "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" made it both the most instantly surprising and intriguing record on the list, as it paired Atlanta weirdo MVP Young Thug with one of the freshest young dancehall voices, Popcaan.
Hot Nigga (Reggae Mix)
Bobby Shmurda Feat. Jah X, Junior Reid, Mavado & Popcaan
Bobby Shmurda's "Hot Nigga" (ok, Lloyd Banks' "Jackpot") has arguably weathered more remixes than any other song this summer, but it might have just gotten the best and most unique one yet. Jah X, Junior Reid, Mavado and Popcaan all join Shmurda to give the Jahlil Beats-produced track a "Reggae mix."
Popcaan Feat. Pusha T
Ever since he popped up on Pusha T's "Blocka" in 2012, Jamaican dancehall star Popcaan has become a favorite of rappers from Drake to Snoop Dogg, the latter of whom recruited him for a guest spot on Reincarnated. Now, for the young star's debut album, he's brought on Pusha T for "Hustle" to repay the "Blocka" favor. With its distinctly Jamaican bounce, "Hustle" is one of the harder tracks on Where We Come From, out on Tuesday, so it makes sense that Popcaan got King Push himself for the track.
