Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman is not a fan of his prison guard. Or prison.
There must not be any white collar prisons in Mexico, because notorious Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has been having a not-so-pleasant time in prison. According to a new report from Mexican outlet Zocalo, El Chapo has alleged via his lawyer that a particular prison guard who is in charge of him has been abusing his power to sexually harass the former drug kingpin.
Specific language used by Chapo includes the fact that the guard “squeezes and bothers me” during daily inspections. He calls the experiences “embarrassing.” Another of Guzman’s lawyers has separately claimed that his client is not able to get proper sleep because guards have been waking him up every four hours as a form of torture. Prison guards using their power unfairly over the incarcerated is really nothing new, but for a former cartel leader it’s probably a lot to take in all at once.
Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman is currently set to be extradited to the United States to face drug distribution and a slew of other charges in both Texas and California. He originally gained infamy for repeatedly escaping from high-security prison.
