Alchemist was kind enough to give us a double dose of new music today. For his second release of the day, Alchemist gave Blue sole possession of his instrumentation, resulting in “Cobb.” Blu still has magic with the pen, stringing together alliterative verse to create vibrant pictures. For the instrumental, Alchemist stuck to his most recognizable sound, looping jazz piano over boom bap drums for a slightly off kilter beat that still forces the listener to nod their head.
Blu Feat. Killa Kali, Big Twins & Planet Asia
We can always count on Alchemist to lace us with some heat, and this Friday is not different. He linked up with a few artists for “Palisades.” Blue, Killa Kali, Big Twins and Planet Asia all get a turn on the mic, although the song is officially Blu’s according to Alchemist’s Soundcloud.
Blu, MED & Elzhi
Stones Throw signee MED is preparing for the release of his Bang Ya Head 4 album on Friday, April 8th. While MED may doomed to be slept-on forever, his last project Bad Neighbor with Madlib and Blu was pretty nice. Judging from his new song "Caddy Music," featuring Blu and Elzhi, BYH4 should be pretty nice as well.
My Life A Movie
King Vory Feat. Blu
King Vory is an 18-year-old artist who hails from Louisville, the city that spawned Hunter S. Thompson and Muhammad Ali. Vory's most notable accomplishment to date is his contribution to Bryson Tiller's "Don't". Vory made his HNHH debut last month with his single "Overdose". He returns today with another single called "My Life a Movie" featuring Blu and produced by Dun Deal (on the track!!).
Grass Ain't Green
Rapper Big Pooh Feat. Blu
Rapper Big Pooh is half of Little Brother, but he’s a talented emcee on his own too. He enlisted talented producer Nottz for the beat, and grabbed California’s lyrical mastermind Blu for the feature on “Grass Ain’t Green.” Big Pooh masterfully spits tales about his (at times misguided) come up, guided by the refrain “green grass, same shoes.”
Fly On A Window
Red Pill Feat. Blu
Red Pill is a rapper out of Detroit who has worked extensively with Verbal Kint and the criminally underrated Apollo Brown. On Friday (11/27), he will release his Day Drunk EP, and today he shares an advance single from the project called "Fly On A Window." The track features a verse from underground stalwart Blu and production from Pill's Mello Music Group labelmate Oddisee.
U R On My Mind (Unreleased)
Miguel Feat. Blu
To celebrate his 30th birthday on Friday, Miguel decided to dig deep into the vaults and release a never before heard track called “U R On My Mind” which he recorded when he was 14 years old back in 1999 with Blu & Anthony Williams. Take a listen to the wavy throwback jam and share your thoughts on the young Miguel in the comments below. Artwork picture taken around Halloween 2007 Miguel says.
Blu, MED & Madlib Feat. Phonte & Likewise
MED, Blu, and Madlib recently announced their full-length joint album Bad Neighbor, and today they roll out the second single "Finer Things." This beat utilizes the sort of decadent, scattered yet soulful production that has defined Madlib's career, and MED and Blu revel in its opulence. "It sound royal when you let Madlib design sound for you." Phonte of Little Brother/Foreign Exchange notoriety makes an appearance, as does Likewise.
Blu, MED & Madlib Feat. MF Doom
The talented trio of Madlib, Blu, and MED just announced that they're linking up for a new album called Bad Neighbor due out next month.
3 Feet Higher
We last heard from underground MC Blu when he was rolling out his new album Good to Be Home, which was around May. After delivering the two-disc body of work, Blu went back into hiding, as he tends to do. Today he makes a rare appearance with a new cut "3 Feet Higher," liberated by the producers Fa†e and Moises King. The cut starts with a voice clip describing a trippy room "that leads to the future, not a future that will be a but a future that might be," which is followed by even more trippiness from Blu.
I Had A Dream
Compton Menace Feat. Trae Tha Truth
Compton Menace has been releasing a steady stream of quality music over the past few weeks, earning reader- and editor-acclaim for his versatile lyrical content and instrumental selection. The latest heat from the California emcee comes in the form of "I Had A Dream." Drawing little from the themes of togetherness touched upon in the famous MLK speech which inspired the track's title and album artwork, the single finds both contributors flipping the concept to discuss their own dreams and, more prominently, their nightmares.
Strong double-albums are a rare breed of music. Most hip-hop classics fall under the 50 minute mark so when an artist comes along claiming they want to jam more than twice as much music into a single project, it's easy for fans to be skeptical. If one artist could pull off the feat, however, that artist is Blu. A little over a year from his last LP, York, the NYC mainstay returns next week with Good To Be Home and, if "The Return" is any indicator, everyone should be on the lookout.
The G Code
Alchemist Feat. Budgie, Action Bronson, Domo Genisis & Blu
We recently learned that producers The Alchemist and Budgie (from the UK) have teamed up for a unique boxset concept album called The Good Book. The Good Book will contain Alchemist and Budgie's two separate albums, which are instrumentals for the most part, and all of which contain gospel samples.
Blu announced today that he's got a new album on the way called Good To Be Home. The album will be produced by Bombay, and according to the rapper it will be his "most defining record ever." Good To Be Home will be released via Nature Sounds on May 20th, and is being described as a love letter of sorts to Los Angeles. Today we've got the first taste of the forthcoming album, "The West." What do you think of this first cut? Looking forward to finally receiving a new album from the elusive Blu?
L'Orange Feat. Blu
"A man fell in love. Then the world was destroyed by an ever-growing nothing in the sky." For those unaware, L'Orange is an emerging producer, poet, musician, manipulator and old soul out of North Carolina who dabbles in instrumental music, hip-hop and jazz.
