An introduction to the TRAPSOUL of Bryson Tiller.
The rap game is an unforgiving place, all too often. Plenty of talents come and go, getting lost in the shuffle, when there are literally dozens of rappers coming up and burning out in the blink of an eye. Especially in the Los Angeles scene, where a certified talent can have a stellar year but have a hell of a time trying to break on the national circuit.
Today has been very heavy on the album release side, as you've probably noticed by the almost insurmountable number of streams we've posted thus far (and there are more to come). In between this week's long list of new releases, as well as last week's, your iTunes should be busy for a while.
Ty Dolla $ign's latest release, Free TC, is all over the place. At 72 minutes, the album spans from orchestral R&B to gangster rap, making it all sound like its part of the same gangster symphony. Along with its variation of sounds, there's a wide variety of features.
Aubrey Drake Graham was born in October, and while many artists choose to name their record labels after hometowns, personal mottos and/or expensive vehicles (looking at you, Rozay), Drizzy paid tribute to his birth month by founding October's Very Own, now known as OVO Sound.
Lil Wayne didn't get the nickname "Mixtape Weezy" for nothing. Over the course of hip-hop history, very few artists have used the art of the mixtape to their advantage as well as Weezy F. It's helped to blow up the likes of Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky and even Drake over the past decade, but Wayne's 13 mixtapes came when he was already a star.
Future has been overwhelming us lately, yet he still remains in-demand. Despite giving us back-to-back releases of three monstrous mixtapes (Beastmode, Monster and 56 Nights), the streets were literally salivating when news broke that he was dropping Dirty Sprite 2.
Young Thug's Stylist Explains The Inspiration Behind His Wardrobe Jun 10, 2015 at 06:31pm 26,436 Views
One of the main reasons Young Thug is so controversial is simply the way he dresses; "I swear every time I dress myself, it go motherfuckin' viral" is now one of his most famous lines. Just look at him at the end of the "Check" video-- wearing a skintight Hooter's tank that even the restaurant's most underendowed hostesses would have trouble fitting into. And that's tame for Thugga.
New year's is here, and thus begins the annual ritual. A few trips to the liquor store to grab the bottle. Texting and calling friends to find out where the turn-up is at. Going crazy enough to celebrate the end of one year, while trying to not screw yourself already for the next 365 days. Rinse and repeat a year later.
6 Lines From Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" We're Still Chewing On Mar 18, 2015 at 03:32pm 57,326 Views
Kendrick Lamar's latest and arguably most impressive effort "To Pimp a Butterfly" is laden with dazzling bars, equipped with illuminating lyrics, all of which marinate in the back of your head like a mind-fuck film might.
When most people think of rap and hip-hop, they often only reference American artists. They’re given most of the credit when it comes to claiming the genre as their own and being responsible for its evolution, in some ways, rightly so, after all, New York was hip-hop's birthing place.
Mac Miller is officially releasing his newest album GO:OD AM tomorrow on Warner Bros. Records. Despite the fact that the new LP, which is already available for streaming via NPR by the way, is only Mac's third proper full-length, he's delivered no less than eleven mixtapes over the years and some EPs to boot.
Tyler The Creator recently made headlines because he was banned from going to Australia and the UK, due to his controversial lyrics. Apparently lyrics from tracks like "VCR," "Blow," "Sarah," "Tron Cat" and "French" have been ruled so obscene, that the UK doesn't want him in their country. The craziest part? This is nothing new.
What A Time To Be Alive: 10 Best Lifestyle Lyrics From Drake & Future Sep 21, 2015 at 11:56am 58,454 Views
Though undeniably potent, a Drake/Future collab isn't a 100% natural fit on paper given their differing rapping styles. That said, they share a lavish and deeply enviable lifestyle, in which they routinely make it rain monsoons at Magic City, eat at 3-star Michelin restaurants, fly in private jets, and have sex with hordes of beautiful women.
Lil Wayne has had a tougher year than anyone. Carter V has officially reached Detox status, and though he's promised the Free Weezy Album, we're not waiting up at night for that either. The sad part is, none of it seems to be his fault. Today, however, we got "Glory," a brand new Weezy single, premiered exclusively on TIDAL.
There was a time when Cash Money was in fact the strongest label in hip-hop. We're talking before unpaid producers and disgruntled artists, before feuds and lawsuits, basically before any of the negatives that cripple the label today. Cash Money used to be a label that every rapper would dream of joining, as it usually meant instant super-stardom.
Over the years many rappers have ventured into acting and usually watching them act on the big screen is excruciating or downright funny. But sometimes there are rare gems where that rapper surprises you and goes beyond expectations to show off a stellar performance.
After dropping No Label 2 and Rich Nigga Timeline last year, Migos have spent the months leading up to YRN The Album sharing their music in a more haphazard, less organized fashion. Plenty of this is due to album delays (and consequently Offset's continued presence in jail), as well as the usual leaks that have plagued patrons of various Atlanta studios this year.
What most music fans don’t know is that a major record label deal is not guaranteed change in your pocket. A recording contract is essentially a legal agreement which allows the record label to exploit an artist’s work through recorded material. This includes the album’s release, promotion, marketing, sales… you name it.
Logic has come a long way since he dropped his first Frank Sinatra-inspired mixtape, Young, Broke & Infamous, four years ago. Off the strength of that tape and the three others that followed it, he steady built up his fanbase, utilizing social media and the blogosphere to its fullest.
Many emcees are noted for their serious, aggrandized personas so it becomes easy to forget that for the most part, Hip Hop is about fun and many rappers use their verses to tell some jokes (isn't that why they call them punch lines?).
Although fashion has always been a part of hip-hop culture, it's been taken to a new level in recent years thanks to artists such as A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, Pharrell, 2 Chainz and Danny Brown. Love it or hate it, more and more of your favorite emcees are becoming acutely fashion conscious, both in and outside the genre.
Unfamiliar with Post Malone? Well it's time to get acquainted. The Dallas singing rapper just signed a contract with Republic Records based largely in part off the stunning success of his breakout record, "White Iverson," which now has over 30 million plays on soundcloud. Malone is white, but he doesn't play basketball.
There are some tracks you can listen to on repeat, for days on end, and you'll never get tired of hearing it. A track as a whole has many elements that come into play which gives it that timeless feel, including the rapper, the lyrics and the production.
Last month we focused on Jeezy's first three albums to curate a Throwback Thursday of the trap star's better-known, early work. Today, we're going to dig a little deeper, going for features, lesser-known cuts, and rarities that he recorded during the course of 2000-2010.
