Bun B & Lil B Dispute The Origins Of The "Cooking Dance" Nov 21, 2015 at 07:15pm
During last year's NBA Playoffs, Lil B accused Houston Rockets guard James Harden of allegedly "stealing" his "cooking dance." As Harden continued to cook upon celebratory moments, Lil B placed his infamous Based God "curse" on Harden, whose team proceeded to lose to Lil B's home team, the Golden State Warriors. Lil B recently took credit for the Rockets' recent firing of head coach Kevin McHale, and Houston OG Bun B has responded by denying any possibility of the Based God's curse.

Hip-Hop Albums That Represent Major Cities
Hip-Hop Albums That Represent Major Cities Aug 18, 2015 at 02:36pm
Have you ever been listening to a hip-hop album from top to bottom and realized that every word, every beat and every cadence is an almost perfect representation of the city you're from? Have you ever taken a step back and noticed how much an album "sounds" like a very distinct place? That is the power of hip-hop albums; they serve as city soundtracks.

Bun B and Pimp C are two of Texas rap's biggest names. When they blessed the beat together as UGK, they were unstoppable. Formed in 1987, the Underground Kings released six LPs of original music along with many more EPs, mixtapes, and big-time features, including spots on Jay Z's "Big Pimpin'" and Three 6 Mafia's "Sippin' on Some Syrup."
Happy Birthday DJ Screw: Elite Chops
Happy Birthday DJ Screw: Elite Chops Jul 20, 2015 at 01:50pm
Houston is a well-known hip-hop hub, and that's largely due to the music of DJ Screw. By pioneering the chopped and screwed remixing method, Screw is one of the first dudes to make really slow rap music cool. It's safe to say that the music of Texans like UGK would be different if it weren't for his legacy, but it's also likely that modern rap-- the A$AP Rocky, Drake, Migos of the world-- would have different styles as well.

Places & Faces Referenced On ASAP Rocky's "A.L.L.A." May 27, 2015 at 07:29pm
After his debut album, Live.Long.A$AP, ASAP Rocky went quiet for awhile-- music-wise, that is. In the interim between L.L.A. and A.L.L.A., Rocky rose atop the fashion world and romanced some very high-profile celebrities. He didn't forget the music, though, and A.L.L.A. is certainly his most ambitious project yet.

For some reason or another, Drake has taken it upon himself to get the world to appreciate the city of Houston, a noble cause, no doubt. Though Houston residents didn't exactly name him their official Canadian ambassador, it's clear Drake and his OVO team put a lot of effort and resources into making Houston Appreciation Weekend a success.

The age-old question under which almost all hip-hop music is scrutinized: does it pass the car test? There isn't a precise recipe for passing the car test. What goes in the living room, livens up an elevator, or tears the roof off of a nightclub, may not be suitable for the cabin of your automobile. If you asked me, I would say that passing the car test requires a certain bold, yet uninvasive presence, allowing you to balance your attention between the rhymes, the rhythm, and the road.

Rap-A-Lot Records was founded by James "J Prince" Smith in Houston, TX in 1986, during hip-hop's Golden Age, as well as the time when Gangsta Rap was slowly starting to gain prominence. Stereotypically, Gangsta Rap is viewed as vulgar, and can sometimes promote violence against women without any really basis or message.
