Violence isn't an odd topic in hip-hop music by any stretch of the imagination; there probably hasn't been a mainstream rap album to hit stores this year in which an emcee didn't at least threaten to kill someone. Gun violence and homicide are an epidemic in hip-hop. Cannibalism, torture, and crucification, on the other hand, are harder topics to come by.

The beauty of a cypher is that it gathers artists from different walks of life and allows them to share their fortes. In a hip-hop cypher, competitors and spectators alike gather to hear some of the hardest bars around. The nicest emcee goes home with the respect of onlookers and a metaphorical prize that comes with murdering everything on sight. The 2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards have potential to include some classic cyphers. This year’s contenders include David Banner, Treach, Remy Ma, T-Rex, and Tsu Surf.

In the late 80s, Westwood was one of the first DJs in Europe to play hip-hop on mainstream radio. As host of the revolutionary BBC Radio 1 Rap Show, started in '94, he became arguably the #1 importer of American hip-hop to the UK and beyond.

If you slept on Mike Shinoda's Fort Minor side-project, you missed out on one of the dopest hip-hop albums of the 2000s. If you didn't, then you know why the possibility of a The Rising Tied follow-up is as exciting as it is. In an interview with Montreality, Shinoda touched on the possibility of the project, claiming, "There's a distinct possibility that there will be some Fort Minor music in the future. And, whatever that is, you know, when that happens, I don't want it to sound like the last thing... I like to keep things moving."

I don't know where you were when the sad wars hit, but if Yung Lean and his Sad Boy affiliates ushered in an era where 15-year-old Swedish kids crying over pokemon cards, clad in North Face, are spawning articles in swanky East Coast outlets, now seems like the time to honor the tradition of hip-hop tear jerkers that broke your heart but didn't actually make you cry that one time. That was just something in your eye, right? No, it was allergies, wasn't it?

Dr. Dre had one of the more memorable ice bucket challenges we've seen thus far, and the hip hop mogul decided to pass the task on to Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem. We saw K.Dot's video earlier in the week, and now Eminem has taken the plunge-- on stage at The Monster Tour no less. That's right, Em got the very special honor of having Rihanna douse him in ice water, for which he quickly returned the favor. From the footage we've seen, it's not clear who the two stars have challenged, but chances are they've picked some high profile candidates.

It's been well over a decade since Eminem reveled in the center of seemingly every fiery controversy in popular culture. Never before had an artist dragged so many bystanders into his path of destruction. His assaults were ghastly, yet outstanding displays of rhyme, cadence and character. In the years of his prime, many would step foolishly into his crossfire, while others simply had it coming. The rest caught stray bullets.

In music we tend to glorify the debut album, always craving the newest and shiniest thing out. The downside of that is usually we're slightly disappointed in the follow up sophomore album, possibly what led to the phenomenon known as the "sophomore slump".
