Jefferson's father victim of drive-by shooting in Compton.

Richard Jefferson Sr., father of NBA veteran forward Richard Jefferson, was reportedly killed in a drive-by shooting in Compton, California on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Jefferson Sr., 65, was reportedly shot several times in the torso and pronounced dead at an area hospital later that night.

Per the LA Times:

"A resident of Inglewood, Jefferson was standing on the corner at West Peach Street and Paulsen Avenue. A dark-colored vehicle carrying several male occupants approached, and at least one person inside the car opened fire, the Sheriff’s Department said."

"Jefferson was shot several times in the torso. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead."

According to ESPN, investigators do not know the motive at this time, and homicide bureau detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. ESPN reports that Richard Jefferson Jr., a NBA veteran with 17 seasons to his name, grew up in Glendale, Arizona with his mother, but he grew closer to his father in recent years as he, his wife and two children spend their summers in Los Angeles' South Bay, not far from Jefferson Sr.'s home in Inglewood.
