When people talk about closing borders to refugees, this probably isn’t what they’re concerned about. However, that doesn’t change the fact that a South Sudanese refugee who had been attending a Windor, Ontario, high school as an 11th grader recently turned out to be a 30 year old man.
Jonathon Nicola, who is 6-foot-9 and 202 pounds, was tearing up the league for his Catholic high school. To be fair, it probably wasn’t the toughest of competition, but he was still getting enough interest from scouts to put together a workout video. His jumper is pretty smooth for a big man. Even if he had made it to the NBA at age 32 or 33, his career would have been pretty short.
On top of probably being kicked off the team and out of high school, Nicola has been arrested and is currently being held by the Canada Border Services Agency. No charges have been publicly made against him, but he’s currently in the country on a student visa. He has a hearing scheduled for next week.
Do you think he enjoyed dunking on unsuspecting kids half his age? Did his friends give him the same “you look like you're 30” look that Channing Tatum got throughout “21 Jump Street”? We have so many questions that’ll probably never be answered.
