Vince Staples's new EP Prima Donna is great. Thursday morning, the rapper released a surreal 10-minute short film to accompany the project. Directed by Nabil, the short film features portions of each song on the project. It begins as Staples leaves a music video shoot and hops in the cab waiting in the alley out back. "Every day is a long day," he tells the cab driver. "I need a vacation."
The driver takes him to the Prima Donna hotel, which is only accessible by an elevator in a parking garage. Fans mob Staples in his hotel room; suddenly he finds himself in a field with a gun. Anyone who also already listened to the EP can probably guess how it ends. But nothing is as it seems. The supernatural elements that run throughout the tense film beckon the question: What is reality?
