Listeners tuned into OVO Sound Radio this weekend eagerly awaiting the premiere of French Montana's new Drake-featuring single, "No Shopping." Drake was expected to use the collab as a way to fire back at Joe Budden, who had hit him with two consecutive diss tracks. As had been the case with a snippet that French shared in May, Drake began his verse by rapping, "Pump, pump, pump it up" -- presumably a reference to the 2003 hit single that Budden is most known for. "I'm not a one-hit wonder, they know all my stuff," he went on to rap. "You let me turn into the n*gga that you almost was."
There are a handful of other lines in Drake's "No Shopping" verse that seem to implicate Budden, and indeed, hours after the track's premiere, Budden released yet another diss track: "Afraid." Today, however, French Montana has revealed that he and Drake didn't have Budden in mind when recording "No Shopping."
The MC4 rapper recently sat down with MTV for a live interview during which he received a haircut. When asked if Drake dissed Budden on his new record, French first smiled and replied, "I don't have nothing to do with that one," before clarifying that he doesn't think Drake intended to use "No Shopping" to address Budden. "I don't think we did that record thinking about Joe Budden," said French. "It's not I don't think," he continued. "I know that for a fact."
One would think that Budden was, at the very least, on Drake's mind during the opening few lines of his "No Shopping" verse, but French seems to imply that it wasn't a diss verse and that "No Shopping" is in no way a diss track. The below tweet, sent out soon after the premiere, suggests that French is aware of the inflammatory lyrics on his new song, though it's unlikely that either him or Drake will continue to entertain any more beef with the New Jersey veteran.
