Last week, Robin Thicke and Pharrell were ordered to pay over $7 million to Marvin Gaye's family on the basis of copyright infringement. Jurors determined that Thicke and Pharrell's "Blurred Lines", which has become one of the best-selling singles of all time, was guilty of plagiarizing Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up".
After the controversial verdict, the Associated Press interviewed renowned producer Jermaine Dupri, who said he understands both sides of the debate. "Younger producers like myself and Pharrell, we make records that are influenced by other records that are out there," says Dupri. Based on the "Blurred Lines" ruling, though, Dupri says, "I believe the same thing has happened to me." Dupri thinks Ciara's latest single, "I Bet", is dangerously similar to Usher's "U Got It Bad", which Dupri produced in 2001. The Atlanta producer plans to contact Ciara to make sure credit goes where credit is due.
