The "Walking Dead" universe continues to expand.

With the ninth season of AMC's The Walking Dead having closed on a gruesome note, many have found a renewed excitement for the series under showrunner Angela Kang's guidance. Now, AMC has officially confirmed the rumored expansion of the Dead universe, announcing a brand new series in the popular franchise.

Production for the upcoming spin-off series is set to begin this summer, with an intended premiere period of 2020. Walking Dead screenwriter Matt Negrete, who previously penned episodes like "Last Day On Earth," "Wrath," "Do Not Send Us Astray," "Inmates," and "Slabtown," will be handling showrunner duties. Chief content officer Scott Gimple, himself no stranger to The Walking Dead's universe, will also play a role in developing the upcoming series.

A report from Vulture reveals that the series will film in Virginia, and spawn the length of ten episodes. While details remain scarce, AMC has confirmed that the two leads will be women, providing a vague and skeletal summary of what to expect: "It will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”

Look for casting news to pick up steam in the coming months. What do you think about this one? Are you looking to spend a bit more time in The Walking Dead's universe?
