It was the night all college football fans were waiting for on Monday when the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers battled it out for the National Championship. It was a night to forget for the number one ranked Crimson Tide, as they lost in a blowout, 44-16. One of the plays that characterized the night, was a fake field goal attempt that ended miserably. Now Alabama head coach Nick Saban is taking the blame for it.
"We thought we had a really, really good fake, and somebody didn't block a guy they were supposed to block, and so it didn't work," Saban said, according to ESPN. "So it was a bad call. It's always that way."
Alabama kicker Joseph Bulovas ran right past the ball which allowed placeholder and back up quarterback Mac Jones to run the ball. However, Clemson's defense saw the play coming from a mile away and stopped it. On the next drive, Clemson scored a touchdown that pretty much sealed the win.
"We'd been running it in practice a lot, and we were going to run it if we had the right look, and we got the look that we wanted," Bulovas said. "We were down by a couple scores at that time, so we were trying to create a spark in the first place."
This was Clemson's second National Title in three years.
