Jay-Z is reportedly planning a surprise concert for NYC just days following his album release.

Jay-Z, who is dropping a new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail with what he calls #newrules in just over a week, continues to think of innovative and different ways to get the attention of his fans. First, Hov surprised fans by announcing Magna Carta would be dropping for 1 million Samsung Galaxy users two days prior to it's official release, and now, it's being reported that Jay has another surprise in store (which isn't really a surprise anymore!).

The New York Post reports that sources close to Hov say he's planning a surprise concert on top of the Ed Sullivan Theater in Times Square for "The Late Show With David Letterman" on July 8th. Apparently this isn't finalized yet because Jay-Z is still seeking the required permits from the city and the mayor's approval.

Back in 2010, Hov and Eminem attempted a similar summer concert plan, which in the end didn't go through because the city had concerns for safety and security, so we'll have to wait and see what happens this time.

A law enforcement source says, "If he gets permission from the mayor’s office, it’s going to be off the hook. They’ll have to shut down Broadway around the Letterman building. They’ll have to have a strong police presence. It’s going to be chaos with so many fans."

We'll update you when confirmation comes either way about this concert.

[Update: Show Is Confirmed]

Jay-Z's show atop the Ed Sullivan theatre has been officially cleared. Jay had to be given permission, as the show meant that a portion of Broadway had to be closed, during rush hour no less.

Hov will perform on Late Night With David Letterman on Monday July 8th.

[Update: The 'Surprise' Show Has Reportedly Been Cancelled.]

Almost as soon as the no-longer-a-surprise show from Jay-Z was confirmed, it's been cancelled.

The NYPost is once more reporting that the permit for the show, which was to take place atop the Ed Sullivan Theater, has been unexpectedly yanked by the city.

Amidst all the speculation about this show, there have been no comments from all three parties involved-- Jay-Z, David Letterman and the city.
