Luis Fonsi made a major breakthrough last year with his single, "Despacito" with Daddy Yankee. The song took over the summer and it was nearly impossible to avoid it. He followed the single with "Échame la Culpa" which featured Demi Lovato. The song went on to be a massive single and proof that Fonsi is an incredible hit-maker. The song is nominated for the newly added Best Latin category at this year's VMA. While Demi Lovato won't be able to attend the VMA's this year, Fonsi sent her a message of love and support a few days before the award show.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Luis Fonsi spoke about his collaboration with Demi Lovato as well as her recent hospitalization after her apparent overdose. He said that he hasn't been able to speak to her directly since the incident but he's “been in contact with her team from day one.”
“I consider her my friend and she’s somebody I care a lot for,” he said. “I was concerned, but I’m glad she has her priorities clear and she knows what she needs to do. As I said in my Instagram post, she’s a strong soul and I know she’ll get through it, through the sickness and we’re only here to support her.”
He added, "The world is behind her and we all want her to get better and we’re all sending her nothing but positive vibes. I have faith that she’s going to come back stronger than ever and she’s going to be an example for many people who have gone through this.”
Over the weekend, the VMA's executive producer Bruce Gilmer explained that they're toggling back and forth on how to address her recent hospitalization.
"We just talked about this. We toggle back and forth with this big platform. Sometimes, the thought is, ‘Let’s use this for a greater good.’ But sometimes, we get feedback that people want to come in and escape the world for a minute.” Gilmer told US Weekly.
Demi Lovato is reportedly working with a specialist that focuses on mental health and sobriety in Chicago but is expected to go back to rehav after she's done seeing the specialist.
