When it comes to playing goofy, scumbag characters, no one does it better than Danny McBride; and when you think of goofy, scumbag people Televangelists might come to mind.
Thus, it's a perfect fit that Danny McBride, as well as John Goodman, would sign up to star in a pilot for an HBO comedy about televangelism. According to Variety, the two will star in a half-hour comedy series titled, "The Righteous Gemstones." Goodman will play Eli Gemstone, the patriarch of the famous Gemstone family of evangelists. Chances are that his motivations in his ministry will be something besides holy.
McBride will star as Jesse Gemstone, Eli's son and the heir to the Gemstone throne. He's considers himself a maverick in the televangelism game, and wants to bring the "teachings" of his father to a new generation, meaning he'll probably find himself coming up with some ridiculous and hilarious schemes. McBride will also handle writing, directing, and executive producing for the show.
McBride will be joined by Jody Hill and David Gordon Green as executive producers. The trio of McBride, Hill, and Green previously brought us hilarious McBride comedies such as Vice Principals and Eastbound & Down. John Goodman had recently reprised his role as Dan Conner on ABC's Roseanne, which was cancelled thanks to Roseanne Barr's Twitter racism.
If HBO picks up the pilot (and knowing their history with McBride, they probably will), we should expect another crude and side-splitting comedy from McBride.
