It's difficult to argue that Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" was anything but the biggest rap song of 2014 (unless you're arguing that it's not a "rap" song to begin with, but that's a whole other story). The record sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 all summer, and sold more than any other song in the genre. It was then, unsurprising that Iggy and Charli's duet came out on top at the Billboard awards a few weeks back, but a new petition suggests that it should have been disqualified on a technicality.
According to the petition-- which already has thousands of signatures --singles that qualify for the televised awards (which differ from Billboards print trophies) must be released after March 10th.
The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. "Fancy" was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting. This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would've won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without "Fancy" as a nominee.
Update: Billboard has confirmed that the date range applies to a song's success within the timeframe, rather than its release date. Thus, "Fancy" is more than eligible.
