Weekly review of the Hip-Hop and R&B sales/charts.
This segment of Charts Don't Lie is relatively subdued, as we have no big new entries to speak of just yet. While Childish Gambino's new album, Because The Internet, dropped last week, it has yet to start charting although it is expected to sell a pretty respectable amount, especially considering it's double the amount of his last release, Camp.
This past week we did receive quite a few massive hip-hop records, including a new banger from the Young Money crew, a massive remix of YG's "My Nigga," and a stand-out ScHoolboy Q record "Break The Bank," among other Very Hotttt releases.
There was not too much I was really fucking with last week that hasn't already received enough attention, so I just found three cuts for this week. I don't really have much to say either. Rockie Fresh and Casey Veggies bring something you can chill too, Rich Hil and The Weeknd have something you can get high too, and Mike Posner..I just threw that one on there for kicks.
Waka Flocka Reveals Rap EDM Album "Flockaveli Psychotics" To Drop Next Year Nov 21, 2013 at 02:52pm 1,865 Views
Waka Flocka has not been shy about his support of the EDM genre, he's even touring with electronic DJ Steve Aoki at the moment. We caught Waka on a day off in L.A. and got a quick update on what it's like to tour with Aoki, Flockaveli 2, and his EDM rap album.
This week the hip-hop underground proves you don't need to be mainstream to top the Billboard 200, at least these days. Two mainstays within the underground movement debuted within the top 10 of the Billboard charts this week.
2013. What a year. There was a bit of the old, with veterans making major moves in front of and behind the mic, as well as keeping their relationship with law enforcement afloat. A bit of the new, with a host of MC’s coming to kicking off their rookie year as well as some leaving us all too soon.
Rap & R&B Were The Only Genres That Saw An Increase In Digital Music Sales In 2013 Jan 5, 2014 at 11:45am 257 Views
As reported by Billboard, 2013 was the first year that saw a decrease in overall digital music sales since the iTunes store opened in the U.S. in 2001.
Last week we questioned the grip of Will.i.am's influence on the mainstream, with his solo effort, #willpower, moving less than 30k opening week. We could also blame this on the ever-waning sales of albums in general. This week, we get LL Cool J's Authentic album as a new entry in Charts Don't Lie.
Boldy James is not your average drug-talking and dealing rapper. It shows in his musical output, from his above par beat selection, to his descriptive and almost eloquent rhymes, Boldy is far from average.
This week's Underrated Audio will put you on to five cuts from rising artists all of sorts.
The Grammys had a positive effect in terms of album sales, as those nominated and those who won both received a boost in the past seven days. Despite Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city not taking home a Grammy, the rapper still saw a spike in his sales and an almost twenty-spot jump up the charts.
The first week of April has arrived, and along with it came a few jams from some of the usual suspects: King Chip, Action Bronson, Young Roddy and Travi$ Scott. These four are no strangers to Underrated Audio, but soon one or two of them may get too big for the UA circuit and move on up to Top Tracks of the Week.
As an actor, Common has definitely been in some major mainstream flicks and get his due recognition for it. As a rapper, Common borders on the underground/conscious scene, although he's not fully immersed in it because he does do double duty acting.
This week we see a new entry in Chart's Dont Lie, with Tyler, the Creator's WOLF having dropped on April 2nd. The rapper is definitely expanding his fanbase, with this album impressively debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200. Tyler has been known for extreme and controversial lyrics, which may have made him less accessible to the general public in the past.
This week we don't have too many songs for your to look through.
Pusha T said in an interview that he had the best album of the year. On top of that he said that he had the best production. The audience rating on our site's review of this album at an outstanding 93%. This album is undoubtedly one of the best of 2013 with producers such as Kanye West, Hudson Mohawke, The Dream, Pharrell Williams and...
Charts Don’t Lie… how easily you’re hated. Understandably so considering math can be agitating. That said this ongoing chart is an aggregate of the best record keeping the industry has to offer. From Nielsen Soundscan to Billboard and beyond, these calculations are here to provide important information. And this week is no different. For starters, as projected, 2
Talking To Ty Dolla $ign & Buddah Shampoo On "Ratchet In My Benz" Jul 11, 2013 at 01:51pm 3,613 Views
Ty Dolla $ign has been on the come-up for awhile, and although he still is on his way up, he's definitely started carving out his own lane within the rap/r'n'b game. The West Coast native has been steadily dropping mixtapes, since 2011's House On The Hill, to his most recent, Beach House 2.
Last week we saw several independent rappers make their debut on the charts (sort of-- some of them didn't sell enough to actually chart, yet), but this week we return to the big guns, like Drake and DJ Khaled. Khaled is an interesting case, because while he is definitely considered among the 'big guns' aka mainstream stars, he didn't move mainstream numbers.
There are only two new entries within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week, and they belong to two rappers: ScHoolboy Q and Kid Cudi. As we said last week, Q was projected to move 150-160k, but fell slightly under that by moving 138,950 copies opening week. This was nevertheless an extremely strong showing from the TDE rapper, which gave him his first #1 debut as well as that of the label's.
Underrated Audio provides you with four tracks from a range of rappers with four quite different sounds. Rappers on today's list are hailing from Inglewood, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Indiana, and each of their tracks is reflective of the environment and area they grew up in. Peep joints from Tree, Skeme, ODDISEE, and Freddie Gibbs in the galleries above.
Battle rap is quickly growing as a culture. What was almost completely relegated to street corners and Youtube a few years ago has garnered national recognition, more TV programming, Pay-Per-View events, and other attention from the mainstream media. Hip-hop icons like Eminem and Snoop Dogg have put on events for the battle scene and at this rate, things can only continue to expand.
Check out some music you may have overlooked this past week. Rockie Fresh- Want My Blood Feat. The Kickdrums & DZ Deathrays This doesn't sound like your typical rap song, Rockie flows over a synth-based beat. Redman- Just Don't Give A Fuck (Remix)
