Chicago has quite a wave of exciting emcees on their way up, and as varied as the scene may be, YP has set him self apart with the release of his Untitled EP earlier this year. A clear 180 from the abrasive drill sounds of the region, YP favors a more timeless sound, with breezy, sample-based beats that show a keen sense of history.
His summer barbecue-set video for "Indica" is similarly referential, but YP's assured skill and personality mean that he's always looking forward. Caleb James shows up on the hook, adding to the decidedly West Coast feel of the record with some talk-box-mimicking melodies. It's the perfect record to ride out the remainder of the warm months to.
