Ever since the generation of artists who grew up in the 90s have been been coming of age, there has been a flood of music dedicated to the year 1999, like Joey Badass' album 1999 and Brockhampton's "1999 Wildfire" (that sounds like something that could have been released in 1999 by Outkast) There was even an obsession with the year decades before it happened, Prince came out with his version of 1999 in 1982, with the title track looking forward to the party that 1999 will inevitably be.
Charli XCX and Troye Sivan look back on the year in their new song, which they performed last night on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. The funny thing about their performance is that Charli is 26 and Sivan is only 23; they would have been seven and four years old respectively in the year, not exactly old enough to remember it very clearly, much less party. The music video has them referencing the Steve Jobs of old, TLC, The Spice Girls, Titanic and tons more.
