"Get Out" was one of the biggest films of 2017, both critically and commercially. The movie helped usher in a new era of film for diverse voices in the film industry. With award season upon us, a lot of people are banking for the film to take home some major dubs at the Oscars. Last night was the Independent Spirit Awards and before hitting the Oscars, they took home some major wins.
Jordan Peele's "Get Out" took home some big wins last night as Peele won for best director and the film took home the award for best feature. The film was presented the award by Chadwick Boseman while Spike Lee handed the award for best picture to Peele. Aside from "Black Swan," Peele's "Get Out" is the second horror film to ever win best feature.
"This means so much," Peele said during the acceptance speech for Best Feature, The Hollywood Reporter reports, "It's clear to everybody in this room, and across the country and across the world, that we are in the beginning of a renaissance right now — where stories from the outsider, stories from the people in this room — the same stories that independent filmmakers have been telling for years — are being honored and recognized and celebrated and I'm so proud to be here with this group of people receiving this."
In addition, THR pointed out that for the past four years, the best feature at the Spirits have gone on to win the Academy Award for best picture. Hopefully this trend continues for a fifth year but we'll have to find out tonight.
