How could you possibly follow up Get Out, Jordan Peele's directorial debut which won an Oscar for best original screenplay and was nominated for best picture, actor and director (all the big categories)? I guess when you make a movie that is such a huge critical and commercial success, you basically have a blank check you can put towards the movie you've been wanting to make all along. Luca Guadagnino, acclaimed director of Call Me By Your Name, did that with his remake of the 70s Italian horror movie Suspiria, which is a pleasantly outrageous film to see in a mainstream theatre. Peele looks set to do this same thing with American culture. He's taking a classic (but also decidedly left-field) movie and reimagining it in a "spiritual sequel." The movie is Candyman and the screenplay is written by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. It'll be directed by Nia DaCosta.
Peele had this to say about it: "The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the ‘Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend."
The is set to be released on June 12th, 2020.
