He may be a man of few words, but when he does drop something, Isaiah Rashad always leaves an impression. As one of, if not THE most underrated TDE artists, Rashad has been relatively quiet since the release of his excellent album The Sun's Tirade. Now, Rashad has returned to the fold with his own take on Tay-K's viral hit "The Race," which had reached peak buzz earlier this month. For whatever reason, Rashad has deemed the Tay-K banger a worthy vehicle for his comeback, and thus, a freestyle was born.
Unlike many of the rappers who have opted to rhyme over "The Race," Rashad has the experience of a veteran, and has been delivering solid lyricism and flow for years now. Anyone who has heard his track "Soliloquy" off The Cilvia Demo can attest to his cleverness with the pen. And while "The Race (Freestyle)" isn't exactly Rashad as his lyrical best, he still manages to impress over the course of the track's short, two minute span.
Unlike the track's original creator, Rashad's race is not against the long arm of the law - instead, it has to do with some of the rapper's more explicit sexcapades. "Soon as I beat the face, bitch I did the race," raps Rashad, as the track winds to a close. "Bust a nut, then I go out my way." While Tay-K currently stands to be locked up for a long time, Rashad seems content with his lot in life. If one had to choose between either rapper's conceptual races, I'd wager that many prefer Rashad's scenario.
While the track lacks much of the nuance of The Sun's Tirade, it's still refreshing to get some new music from Isaiah Rashad. Perhaps it's a sign that the TDE rapper has a project on the way, or perhaps he simply felt inspired by Tay-K's struggle. Either way, it's never a bad thing to get some new Isaiah.
